That metalic smoke smell...
So, as some of you know, I got some 512 MB DDR-400 Kingmax RAM for xmas to bring my system up to a gig of ram. As most of you dont know, I've had NOTHIGN BUT TROUBLE with this Ram. Within a week of installing it, my system became really unstable, forcing me to remove it and return it for a replacement. That wasnt much of a problem, and the replacement peice came friday, but because I was out of town, I didn't get around to installing it until this morning.
Have you ever smelled the smell of hot eletrical component?
Its the smell dreaded by all computer people. That horrid, acrid smell of hot electronics getting ready to die in a blaze of molten glory. That's the smell I got when I turned on my computer after putting in the ram. Erik yanked the plug, as I went "Oh shit, whats that smell!?"
That smell was my Asus A7V8X-X motherboard frying as 2 of the ram connectors cooked in their slots. Parts of the motherboard are ok. The computer turns on, posts, and the drives spin, but nothing displays, and there is a very good chance that more than just the motherboard is fried. Probably ALL of my ram, and my processor may be a deadder too. My fingers are crossed for my video card, and my sound card. But the rest... at least my drives are all ok.
What a great fucking way to start the week.
The moral of this? There are two. One: Never buy ram from Kingmax. Ever again. EVER. I'm buying from Kingston, even if it is twice the price. Two: Never ever buy anything from Newegg.com ever again. From here on out, I refuse to ever buy from them, and I encourage all of you to boycot them and NEVER purchase anything from them. Those cheep prices are for a reason. They buy shit and sell it to gullible people. And unless I want to paly 15% of the cost of my ram, im out 60$. Fuckers.
And until I can get replacement parts, starting with the motherboard, I'm without Everquest 2, not to mention ALL of my stuff on my system. Poor Trinoc is a dead hulk, sitting with his case open and exposed, his guts hanging limp and charred like some horrible vivisection project gone wrong. *cuddles shingami* At least I still have my laptop.
